UNITED STATES 2025 TARIFF POLICIES: GLOBAL IMPACT AND ECONOMICS REVIEW OF POLICIES

Abstract

This paper will give a detailed discussion of the sweeping tariff policies of President Donald Trump introduced after his inauguration in January 2025. The flagship in these policies is the so-called Universal Tariff Program, which will put a minimum tariff at 10 percent on almost all imports and a higher tariff on strategic industries and China imports. The article discusses the economic justification of these measures, their sectoral effects, macroeconomic effects, the international reaction, and legal issues. There is some early evidence of both success and failure: the covered industries are indicating investments and employment creation, as downstream manufacturers, retailers, and consumers experience high costs pressures. The trading partners across the world have retaliated leading to disruptions in the international supply chains and challenging the multilateral trading system that was established after the war. The article concludes that such tariff policies constitute a radical reorganization of the U.S. trade relationships with far-reaching effects on the world economy, the full scope of which will be determined by the length of the policies, corporate adaptation patterns, and macroeconomic factors in genera
